Unleash the Beast!
Jan Willmann is senior assistant at the Chair of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on building with robots and the examination of architectural principles that are changing aesthetics and how we think about architecture and robots. The paradigm shift occurring in robotics, such as the development of “soft” robots, is also gaining relevance in architecture. Robots working with people on a construction site cannot simply repeat fixed programmed sequences, but must learn to react to unknown and unplanned situations. Unleash the Beast!
In addition to his professional experience in several architectural offices, Jan has participated in a number of international research and exhibition projects. He publishes extensively, including The Robotic Touch – How Robots Change Architecture (2014), the first anthology of robotic fabrication in architecture.
