The sound, installation, and video artist Carsten Nicolai explores the frontiers of perception. His works oscillate between time – light – space – sound: sounds become visible and physically perceptible, and light frequencies become audible. The worlds he creates resemble a laboratory. Under controlled conditions, he recreates natural phenomena and translates them into audiovisual installations, some of them room-filling. Self-organized processes, and moments of disturbance and blurring, are an important part of the works. In 1997, Nicolai, who initially studied landscape architecture, took part in documenta X. Solo exhibitions at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, and Stedelijk Museum followed. In 2008 he was awarded the Zurich Prize.
Carsten Nicolai invites you to his studio, where he will shed light on his artistic approach. The evening will end at HBC.
