LEOPOLD SPENNER is the CEO and co-founder of alcemy, a Berlin-based start-up that reduces CO2 emissions in the production of concrete. His family is already in its fourth generation of operating several cement and concrete plants. Spenner studied industrial engineering at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, conducted research at the Association of German Cement Works, and got to know the industry even better through the Boston Consulting Group before joining forces with Dr. Robert Meyer to launch the contech (construction tech) start-up, alcemy. Using AI-supported software, they can reduce the clinker content of concrete to reduce its carbon footprint. The software is used both at the cement plant and inside the mixer truck, collecting real-time data 24/7, making forecasts, and intervening in production when possible. Currently, alcemy employs over 20 female employees. Customers such as Märker Zement and Rohrdorfer Zement rely on alcemy’s expertise.
