From “Made in China” to “Designed in China” – the world’s second largest economy is Germany’s most important trading partner after the USA. At the same time, some of the world’s largest and most successful social media platforms originate from China. Often with hundreds of millions of users, they are a place for social interaction, entertainment and knowledge sharing, but political issues are also discussed.

From sales market to competitor – how has the relationship between Germany and China changed in recent years? How do business and politics interact? And how is Beijing trying to shape the image of China in Germany and Europe?

KATJA DRINHAUSEN is Head of Domestic Policy and Society at MERICS, the Mercator Institute for China Studies. Her research interests include the development of China’s legal system, (digital) governance, the social credit rating system and human rights.

An evening about China’s future role in the world, de-risking in strategically important areas and new opportunities from a German perspective.

Moderation: Nadin Heinich
